Cinnamon Rolls

Spread the love

I can never walk through the mall and pass Cinnabon and not Stop and get one…. ok, a whole box… with extra cream cheese frosting… don’t judge me. I just really love cinnamon rolls. There’s something about that cinnamon mixed with butter and brown sugar smell that’s so intoxicating! It smells like heaven on earth.

The mall closest to me actually closed their Cinnabon. What is wrong with them?! So, of course had to perfect my recipe so I could make the at home anytime I got a craving. I use a basic sweet dough recipe as the foundation, except I substitute buttermilk for the whole milk and I like to add zest to it. Orange or lemon will work. For this particular recipe, I use orange zest. It gives the dough a nice flavor but you can leave it out if you don’t want that extra flavor.

You make the sweet dough recipe just like my Brioche bread, making it the day before. But, I make the dough into the rolls before I refrigerate them. So, roll out the dough into a rectangle. In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread the mixture over the dough. Roll up the dough lengthwise to the end. Cut the dough in 12 equal rounds. Place the rolls in a parchment lined 9×13 baking pan. Place the rolls 3 across and four down. If you want smaller rolls, cut them into 20 rolls, placing them 4 across and 5 down. Cover with plastic wrap and place the pan into the refrigerator overnight. The next day, take out the pan and let them rise for about 2 hours in a warm place. Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until browned. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Spread with cream cheese frosting and serve immediately.

This is a great cinnamon roll recipe. The buttermilk in the dough makes it extra moist and soft. The cream cheese frosting puts the rolls over the top. Enjoy!
