It’s Piiiiiii Day! So, what is Food Bloggers favorite way to celebrate Pi Day? With a Pie! A decorated Apple pie!
I really love decorating pies with shaped pie dough. It gives it such a beautiful look.
This Apple Pi Pie is topped with braids, twists, leaves and Pi symbol cutouts. And it’s so easy to put together.
Roll out a half of recipe of chilled pie dough. For the braids, use a pastry cutter, pizza wheel, or a sharp knife and cut 3 equal strips of dough. Squeeze the ends together to hold the strips in place. Then start the braid criss crossing the dough. When you get to the end of the braid, squeeze the ends together just like the start of the braid.
The twists are done the same way. Just use 2 strips instead of three and cross them one over the other.
I also made crinkle strips, by using a pastry cutter with a fluted or crimped end and just cut a few thin strips.
For The Pi cutouts, I used a Pi cookie cutter that I purchased on Etsy. I also used leaf cookie plungers for the leaves. These can be purchased on Amazon.
Roll out the second half of the dough recipe. And place it in the bottom of a pie plate. Place sliced and seasoned apples on top. Get the recipe for the Apple pie here:
Arrange all of the dough braids, twists, and cutouts on top in any order that you want. Brush with an egg wash of 1 egg and 1 tsp water. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 1 hour or until crust is browned. Enjoy!
