What’s your favorite Summer cocktail?
Since I’m not going on a tropical vacation again this year, I’m bringing the the tropics to me, a Tropical Mai Tai!
What is a Mai Tai?
The Mai Tai is tropical classic 1940’s tiki cocktail traditionally made of rum, orange curaçao, fresh lime juice and orgeat (almond syrup). Unlike a more modern recipe, the original cocktail actually has no fruit juice in it besides lime juice.
How is my Tropical Mai Tai made?
My Mai Tai is definitely more on the modern recipe side. I use a combination of orange juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, grand Marnier, grenadine and two types of rum, one dark and one light.
Because of the fruit juices, it’s more like a rum punch than a traditional Mai tai, but it still has the Mai tai flavors.
Add the juices, rums and grand Marnier and ice to a shaker. If you don’t have grand Marnier, you can also use Cointreau. Both have the orange flavor needed for the recipe.
Shake well and pour into a highball glass that’s filled with ice. Pour or spoon in the grenadine. It should mostly go to the bottom of the glass. Garnish with orange and lime slices, pineapple and fresh rosemary.
