What exactly are cinnamon rolls?
Cinnamon rolls are sweet baked dough, made by rolling the dough flat, usually filled with a cinnamon-sugar filling, then rolled and sliced. They’re made with a rich dough leavened with either yeast or sourdough starter.
How are these Cast Iron Orange Glazed Cinnamon Rolls made?
Start with adding yeast and warm milk to the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the rest of the ingredients and knead in the stand mixer. Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the dough overnight. The dough is very soft and it’s much easier to let it rise in the refrigerator, so it’s cold when you roll it out. But if choose to not let it rise in the refrigerator, cover it and rise in a warm area for at least an hour.
Roll out half of the dough into a rectangle, spread softened or melted butter, and sprinkle it with a mixture of granulated sugar, orange zest and cinnamon. Roll up the dough on the shorter side. Cut the into 7-8 rolls and place them in a cast iron pan. Roll out the second half of the dough and repeat the process. Add the rest of the rolls to the pan with the first set. Cover them with a towel and let them rise until doubled for about one hour, then bake.
