With Labor Day coming up on Monday, and school starting for us next week, I think I need one last Summer cocktail to cheers to my favorite season. So, while we’re enjoying our BBQ’s, I’ll be having a Passion Fruit Rum Cocktail.

Where do passion fruit grow?

The passionfruit is native of southern Brazil. It grows in several Caribbean countries as well as in the United States in California, Florida, and Hawaii.

How is passion fruit used in this recipe?

For this cocktail, the passion fruit pulp is scooped out of the rind add spooned right into the cocktail. There’s no need to strain the pulp from the seeds. You can use all of it for the cocktail.

How is the Passion Fruit Rum Cocktail put together?

Start with adding a sugar rim to a low ball glass. You can add regular granulated sugar with a little lime zest or a flavored cocktail sugar, which can be purchased at specialty stores or Amazon.
Add enough ice to the glass to fill it up all the way. Add white rum, Grand Marnier, simple syrup and lime juice. Then, add all,of the pulp from one passion fruit. Stir to mix the ingredients, then top with a splash of club soda.
This cocktail is so good that one just may not be enough. Lol

If you can not find fresh passion fruit, you can also use about 2 ounces of thawed frozen passion fruit pulp.

Where can you buy fresh passion fruits?

Passion fruits are easy to buy in warm weather areas of the US, the Caribbean and Latin American countries where they grow. If your not in these regions, it is much more difficult to find them. Some supermarkets that sell specialty fruits in the Summertime sometimes have them. There are also several online stores that sell them as well to ship to you.

When is passion fruit season?

Depending on the location, passion fruit is available almost all year round. California grown varieties are available from January through November.

Can any other types of liquor be substituted for the white rum?

You can easily substitute a golden or dark rum for the white rum. Changing the type of liquor all together like vodka or tequila may change the taste of the cocktail all together.

A Summer cocktail filled with fresh passion fruit pulp, rum, Grand Marnier and lime juice!

Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients
  

  • Cubed Ice
  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 oz Grand Marnier
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp simple syrup
  • Pulp of one passion fruit
  • Splash of club soda
  • Lime wedge for the cocktail sugar
  • Flavored sugar to garnish the rim
  • 1/2 fresh passion fruit to garnish
  • Lime slice to garnish
  • Mint leaves to garnish

Instructions
 

  • Use a lime wedge to wipe around the rim of a low ball glass. Place a few spoonfuls of flavored cocktail sugar into a dish. Dip the glass upside down into the sugar.
    Fill the glass with ice. Add rum, Grand Marnier, lime juice and simple syrup. Add passion fruit pulp and stir. Top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with lime slice, mint leaves and a passion fruit half.
